4:24 a.m. and all is well

21 May

It probably won’t be well in 12 hours when I will want to lay my head on my desk and weep from exhaustion, but when the insomnia monster rears its ugly head, what can you really do?  I have visited the beds of my sleeping children, hoping that their slumber would transmit to me through their warm little bodies, but no such luck.

We have a  busy weekend planned – with 2 birthday parties, a graduation ceremony, and multiple dance recitals.  When you excel in ballet, tap, AND jazz, what can I say?  There are a lot of opportunities to perform.  It brings to mind her tap recital last year.  One of Anna’s tap shoes came untied during the 4 minute number.  Her shoe came untied and then, lacking any means of fastening, her foots stepped right out of the shoe.  And she kept right on tapping in one shoe. She tapped right around the tap shoe on the stage.

When the recital was over, I braced myself to reassure her that everything was okay and no one had noticed anything.  And you know what?  SHE was not the least bit bothered.  She never mentioned the fiasco except to inform me matter-of-factly that her shoe had come untied.  She was onstage in front of 500 people.

I told her that tricky and unexpected things happen all the time, and that the mark of a true professional is to not become mired in the disaster – to work around it – to keep calm and carry on.  Just like she had done.  I don’t know if she heard a word I said, but I was really impressed with Anna.  And this year – double knots.

And with that said, I shall now attempt, once more, to retire to my chambers.

I am not surprised that you have raised such a together kid. Be proud, Mama.

Sadly, I’ve had one too many sleepless nights here. I wish you were closer. We could at least go out and put that insomnia to good use. 🙂
